How to plant a tree that lives

Dig wide, not deep
Make the hole two to three times the root ball wide and no deeper than the ball. Planting too deep kills more trees than drought does.

Free the roots
Tease circling roots loose from potted stock so they grow out into your soil instead of choking the trunk in a year or two.

Backfill with native soil
Leave the bag of amendment out of the hole. Fill with the soil you dug so the roots learn to live in Boise clay from day one.

Water deep, then mulch
Soak the root ball, lay 2 to 3 inches of mulch pulled back off the trunk, and water once a week through the first summer.
